Introduction

Hello everyone,

  My name is Oliver Q. and I attend NDNU majoring in Human Services.  I currently work as a P.E. instructor for an elementary school, Program Director for SF Basketball Academy, and Athletics Coordinator for the district/city.  I have two lovely daughters and am with the love of my life as I've known her since Kindergarten, so we've known each other for over 25 years... but that's a story for another time.


  I'm currently writing from Belmont, CA where my home is now my gym, a distance learning hub, office, classroom, and whatever else I can make of it, haha.  This COVID season has definitely made things different, but we just have to adapt and continue moving forward just hoping for the best.  During this time, it's interesting to be student as we are able to learn and grow while at home with utilizing technology as our resource.


  Growing up and going through school, I've always been interested in history.  I've always marveled at the past and yearned to learn more especially about the different cultures around the world.  I love stories and I believe history has the best stories out there.  I just want to try and understand more about the world and find out about the importance of comprehending the past to what is happening now and foresee in the future with how things are headed.


  I'm a Filipino American born in San Francisco and raised in Daly City.  I was raised by two caring and strong parents who worked hard and provided me and my younger brothers with a life that I'm blessed to have.  My family history is connected to the Phillippines and my parents always taught us about our culture, which I have embraced and continue to take pride in.  I also have a military family lineage which dates to my Grandfather who served in World War II, Uncles that toured in operation Desert Storm and Afghanistan plus now my youngest brother who is currently serving in the Army National Guard.


  I'm looking forward to learning more about history and grasp as much knowledge as I can in this class.  I hope to obtain vital information about the world and our past, so I'm excited to start...

BBC.com 2020, May.   This is an interesting and controversial article as it involves tests on human subjects more specifically on Africans.  With the pandemic going on, it's just been a whirlwind of a race to find a vaccine, but the process is extensive yet it is easy to create a "infodemic" which is caused by fake news especially being shared on social media due to theories.  There has been constant backlash for human and animal testing, but scientists push the importance of doing these clinical trials in order to find a viable vaccine that can hopefully help our bodies fight back this virus.      The main concern is using people in Africa to be the test subjects which is causing an uproar due to the "colonial mentality" of how doctors are pinpointing only Africans to be used for the tests of the vaccine which is deadly, discriminatory, and found to be racist.  I understand...

Final Letter Project: Thee Olympians

Link to video project Thee Olympians     My letter is about the famous African American  olympic  track athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos  with the controversy in regards to the medal ceremony in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City on October 16, 1968 where they peacefully protested with their fists in the air in solidarity about equality and poverty on the podium to display their statement to the world.  They represented the United States, broke records, and achieved greatness.  Yet they were kicked out of the USA team and continued to receive harsh treatment when they did nothing wrong.      Especially during this time, we often hear about Colin Kaepernick taking a knee and all the movements towards equality happening all over the world.  Now more than ever, these brave men endured a lot plus deserve more than just the praise and recognition they continue to get.  They have opened the path for many young athletes to w...
