CH 21: Communism for Women

What changes did communist regimes bring to lives of women?

Communism was a phenomenon of enormous significance that became global.  Communist regimes came to power all over the world in which built socialism transforming the societies in which it was against capitalism, democracy, other political and ideological insights of the West mainly the U.S.  But among the earliest and most revolutionary actions of new communist regimes were efforts in liberating and mobilizing women.  Women had full legal and political equality such as ; marriage becoming a civil procedure among freely consenting adults; divorce was legalized and made easier, as was abortion; illegitimacy was abolished; women no longer had to take their husbands surnames; pregnancy leave for employed women was mandated; and women were actively mobilized as workers int he countries drive to industrialization.  Women were trained and educated.  There were opportunities for women to have more responsibility and participation in possibilities that arose for them.  This specifically in China was against the Confucian traditions by taking shape as more politically communist.  There were still limits such as top political leadership  would be very rare as men would still be the leaders compared to women.
