CH 23: Change

In what way(s) do you see the historical developments described in this chapter continuing to evolve in our world today?

Throughout history, there has been movements, revolutions, transformations, evolutions, and experiences that have altered humanity.  The economy has drastically fluctuated due to many reasons during the course of history (wars, invasions, new developments, etc).  The times are ever changing with modern innovations and the push for advancements in all subjects (science, education, technology, art, language, traditions, politics, religion, etc.) has shaped this world.  The increase of human population spreading all over the earth has created a roller coaster of opportunities like jobs or disaster (plague, environment concerns, misuse of power, etc.).  We can think of the transformation of the world economy from simple yet long trade routes of the past to shipments and monetary transactions being made all over within seconds.  History has taught us about the rise and fall of empires, learning about our ancestors plus culture, and comprehending the past to better understand our present which lead to the future is what continues to evolve our world today.  We still face constant battles between what we believe is right or wrong, better or worse, etc.

One important historical development described in this chapter that is still evolving in our world today is equality.  One especially is the focus on feminism.  More women around the world are becoming more vocal and pushing for equality.  It has been a long journey for women since the past and they still face many obstacles that must be overcome.  These challenges are not new, but the fact that the world is changing and people (specifically men) need to understand that we are all human beings regardless of gender, color, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, or whatever because its only one "race".  We should be more accepting of everyone as we should be viewed the same in regards to education, opportunities, and given that level of respect which is a give and take balance.

Another developing subject is in regards to the global environment.  The earth has taken a beating from all the things caused by man and needs to be taken more seriously as we live on this planet together.  Environmentalism is a movement to protect and help improve the health of our planet earth.  It's not just about us, but how we need to be more responsible for taking better care of our world.  Its more than just recycling and making sure we don't litter, but protecting the animals, keeping the water clean, and conservation of plants are key factors of the ecosystem that keeps things balanced.  Its making sure we don't over compensate or disrupt the flow of mother nature too much that we experience catastrophic imbalances that could cause major global phenomenons.  Protecting the earth should be of upmost importance for all of humanity and as living beings, we should all agree on this.

Is it more useful to view the two world wars as separate and distinct conflicts or as a single briefly interrupted phenomenon? Mawathe, Anne. "Coronavirus: Why Africans should take part in vaccine trials". BBC.com 2020, May.   This is an interesting and controversial article as it involves tests on human subjects more specifically on Africans.  With the pandemic going on, it's just been a whirlwind of a race to find a vaccine, but the process is extensive yet it is easy to create a "infodemic" which is caused by fake news especially being shared on social media due to theories.  There has been constant backlash for human and animal testing, but scientists push the importance of doing these clinical trials in order to find a viable vaccine that can hopefully help our bodies fight back this virus.      The main concern is using people in Africa to be the test subjects which is causing an uproar due to the "colonial mentality" of how doctors are pinpointing only Africans to be used for the tests of the vaccine which is deadly, discriminatory, and found to be racist.  I understand...

Final Letter Project: Thee Olympians

Link to video project Thee Olympians     My letter is about the famous African American  olympic  track athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos  with the controversy in regards to the medal ceremony in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City on October 16, 1968 where they peacefully protested with their fists in the air in solidarity about equality and poverty on the podium to display their statement to the world.  They represented the United States, broke records, and achieved greatness.  Yet they were kicked out of the USA team and continued to receive harsh treatment when they did nothing wrong.      Especially during this time, we often hear about Colin Kaepernick taking a knee and all the movements towards equality happening all over the world.  Now more than ever, these brave men endured a lot plus deserve more than just the praise and recognition they continue to get.  They have opened the path for many young athletes to w...
