QUIZ 4: Finale

Mawathe, Anne. "Coronavirus: Why Africans should take part in vaccine trials". BBC.com 2020, May.   This is an interesting and controversial article as it involves tests on human subjects more specifically on Africans.  With the pandemic going on, it's just been a whirlwind of a race to find a vaccine, but the process is extensive yet it is easy to create a "infodemic" which is caused by fake news especially being shared on social media due to theories.  There has been constant backlash for human and animal testing, but scientists push the importance of doing these clinical trials in order to find a viable vaccine that can hopefully help our bodies fight back this virus.      The main concern is using people in Africa to be the test subjects which is causing an uproar due to the "colonial mentality" of how doctors are pinpointing only Africans to be used for the tests of the vaccine which is deadly, discriminatory, and found to be racist.  I understand...

Final Letter Project: Thee Olympians

Image
Link to video project Thee Olympians     My letter is about the famous African American  olympic  track athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos  with the controversy in regards to the medal ceremony in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City on October 16, 1968 where they peacefully protested with their fists in the air in solidarity about equality and poverty on the podium to display their statement to the world.  They represented the United States, broke records, and achieved greatness.  Yet they were kicked out of the USA team and continued to receive harsh treatment when they did nothing wrong.      Especially during this time, we often hear about Colin Kaepernick taking a knee and all the movements towards equality happening all over the world.  Now more than ever, these brave men endured a lot plus deserve more than just the praise and recognition they continue to get.  They have opened the path for many young athletes to w...

CH 23: Change

Image
In what way(s) do you see the historical developments described in this chapter continuing to evolve in our world today? Throughout history, there has been movements, revolutions, transformations, evolutions, and experiences that have altered humanity.  The economy has drastically fluctuated due to many reasons during the course of history (wars, invasions, new developments, etc).  The times are ever changing with modern innovations and the push for advancements in all subjects (science, education, technology, art, language, traditions, politics, religion, etc.) has shaped this world.  The increase of human population spreading all over the earth has created a roller coaster of opportunities like jobs or disaster (plague, environment concerns, misuse of power, etc.).  We can think of the transformation of the world economy from simple yet long trade routes of the past to shipments and monetary transactions being made all over within seconds.  History h...

CH 22: Gandhi

Image
What was the role of Gandhi in India's struggle for independence? When Gandhi was in South Africa, he experienced racism from British and became involved in organizing campaigns with Indians, mainly Muslims, to protest the country's policies of racial segregation.  He also developed a concept of India that included Hindus and Muslims which created a political philosophy known as the "truth force". His confrontational but non violent approach to political action were supported widely by Indians, Hindus, Muslims, and people of different classes, views, and scholars.  Gandhi was seen as a magical/spiritual figure who became known as Mahatma Gandhi, the Great Soul.  He was one who spoke with importance and powerful responses that seemed radical but were praised by many people who followed and praised him.  He fought back with words, not physical actions.  He worked on moral transformations and building a harmonious lifestyle while addressing the way the world was ch...

CH 21: Communism for Women

Image
What changes did communist regimes bring to lives of women? Communism was a phenomenon of enormous significance that became global.  Communist regimes came to power all over the world in which built socialism transforming the societies in which it was against capitalism, democracy, other political and ideological insights of the West mainly the U.S.  But among the earliest and most revolutionary actions of new communist regimes were efforts in liberating and mobilizing women.  Women had full legal and political equality such as ; marriage becoming a civil procedure among freely consenting adults; divorce was legalized and made easier, as was abortion; illegitimacy was abolished; women no longer had to take their husbands surnames; pregnancy leave for employed women was mandated; and women were actively mobilized as workers int he countries drive to industrialization.  Women were trained and educated.  There were opportunities for women to have more responsibilit...

Ch. 20: World Wars

Image
Is it more useful to view the two world wars as separate and distinct conflicts or as a single briefly interrupted phenomenon? I think the world wars should be viewed as two separate but consecutive conflicts as one led to the next.  The World Wars gave way to the United States to becoming a powerful military force and emerging as a global superpower.  The first World War was a test of military might, creating an allegiance, and obtaining territorial gain.  The second World War was about fighting together for a greater cause of combating tyranny, creating allies, and building a new world.  World War I was the "Great War", which started as a European civil war that reached a global scale with the beginnings of world communism and the U.S. entering the war.  The great depression, rise of Nazi Germany under the infamous rule of Hitler with the horrific Holocaust, and destruction (like the bombing of Pearl Harbor) all over the world highlighting the causes in/to Wor...

Pandemic now, Plague of the past...

Image
In the past, there has been countless times through history that we hear about numerous people dying or being affected by viruses/diseases.  Many people were isolated and lacked domesticating animals that meant the absence of acquired immunities to diseases like smallpox, measles, typhus, influenza, malaria, yellow fever, etc.  One was "The Great Dying"(pg 557), when people of Europe arrived to America, there was a smallpox pandemic brought over through the travel by sea that caused so many people to die from the plague plus hunger.  "The Little Ice Age", it was a period of unusual cool temperatures that happened during the early modern period with the peak in the mid-seventeeth century more specifically hitting China, Europe, and North America.  While those in tropical areas experienced extreme heat causing societies and civilizations to go through a tough time of drought, widespread famine, and epidemics that caused many people to die.  Alt...
